GRY.{Shadwell Grylls} X528 Wory c. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.6/HP.24.10.35. re Complaints of Second Gear Jumping out - 20/25 and Bentley Chassis. -------------------------------- With reference to the above, you will have received a copy of Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/Sb.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}1/HR.24.10.35 in reply to E/Lid{A. J. Lidsey}'s enquiry, which tells us that practically all of these complaints occur in mountainous or hilly country such as Switzerland, Scotland, Cornwall, etc. It, therefore, appears clear that we, up to the present, have no equivalent test sufficiently severe to discover this trouble. In my own case I must say that I had no trouble with gears coming out when driving 21-C-4 in Switzerland, but it is obvious that we have not yet found a means of reproducing the trouble, and that wear does not play a very important part in it as shown by the small mileage quoted in Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/Sb.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}1/HR.8.10.35. We have got some way with an analysis of the design, but are not in a position to make recommendations yet. I am, therefore, making this interim report, and when we are ready with a reasonable recommendation we shall have to make strenuous efforts to reproduce the trouble at the Works or else get Mr Bowater and other customers to try out the modification.
