It is extremely difficult to say just what the squeak is due to.

The variation in the brake drum material or Brinell might be a predisposing factor. The composition of the material itself, that is, if the carbon content were up or down, might also affect it, whilst the carbon remaining all the time, of course, within our limits. In addition, the Ferodo is again a variable, and the fitting and finish of the parts.

It is not clear from Br's memos whether it is front or rear brakes which squeak, and I am somewhat sceptical that refacing the shoes is an effective remedy.

It does not appear to me to be any more effective over a length of time than filing up the shoes again.

I am not putting forward the above facts to create difficulties, but since we have no change on design which we know will deal with it, and since we cannot earmark it for material or workmanship, in my opinion it must be a "policy" charge, particularly as the car is a Demonstration Car and it is most important that it should be kept in first class condition, and free from anything in the way of a squeak which is likely to irritate a prospective customer.
