With reference to the exclusion of mud and water, we have not definite tests on this point yet owing to the continued fine weather, but we are fairly satisfied that this need cause no anxiety because we have had a considerable amount of experience in this direction, and the preliminary tests made with the first device during wet weather showed us fairly clearly in what direction to look for trouble. The Drawing Office is now designing a further modification which will render the manufacture of the engine guards very much more convenient, but the Shops will at present continue to manufacture the first scheme, in order to save time, for fitting to the London-Edinburgh chassis The old type of engine guard (not ventilated) are in stock or fitted to chassis for the whole of 1900 series, with the exception of 46 cars. I understand the cost per chassis for scrapping these guards is £1 - 10 - 0. I think it would be advisable to fit in every case where [Side text, handwritten] X879 | ||
