WATER JOINT CLIPS. NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I CHASSIS.
----------------------------------------

Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}6/H.5.1.26. and FN4/DN.4.1.26. attached, we have had this question brought to our attention recently, and consider the trouble is two-fold:-

a/- It has been possible for the rubber joint to be somewhat larger than the pipe by the limit. In addition, apparently the rubber joint continues to vulcanise, and in so doing, the rubber contracts, and further increases the diameter of the joint. In attempting to tighten up a joint which is larger circumferentially than the part it fits on, a pucker is set up, from which leakage occurs.

b/- Our clips were originally made in steel, but had to be modified on account of rusting away. We then produced them as pressings in nickel silver. These, whilst in my opinion adequate for joints which are not larger than the pipe, are not sufficiently strong to squeeze down a pucker and prevent leakage. To do this would require a clip abnormally strong.

The remedies we have in hand are:-

1. We have taken up the question of the jointings with the makers, and modified our limits, at the same time asking the maker to make quite sure that the material is thoroughly vulcanised before delivery. We consider that when rubber hose which fits the piping is used, the clips will be found quite up to strength.

2. We have attempted in the past to obtain spring steel clips, but after considerable expense had been incurred, had to abandon them as the clip makers who were also small spring makers, were quite unable to produce what we required. We have been for some weeks now in communication with a Mr. Brunton of Musselburgh, and through him have got in touch with a firm of West Bromwich, who state that they can produce the clips in stainless steel. We have attempted to obtain this material before, but have had our proposals all turned down as not practicable. We are hopeful that the present negotiations will result in obtaining clips of our present type in stainless steel, which will be approximately twice the
