1020 6th April 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}10/AP. Vandervell Products Ltd., Western Ave., Park Royal, LONDON W.3. Dear Sirs, We enclose herewith photographs of the W/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} bearings which you supplied us for trial in our Bentley Unit. As you see, they are in a very 'sorry' condition and naturally we are disappointed at the results of the test. The bearings were run under our normal endurance conditions at an oil inlet temperature of 100°C. and at alternate full load and light load tests at speeds between 4000 RPM. and 4500 RPM. After 25 hours there was a small quantity of W/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} in the filter and this was found to have increased consider-ably when examined at 28 hours at which time the engine was dismantled. Other than by the condition of the filter, the oil pressure gave little indication of the bearings going so badly and only dropped throughout the run from 35 lbs/sq.in. to 32.lbs/sq.in. For a bearing to give encouragement we expect to be able to carry out an endurance of 50 hours under the above conditions and be in reasonably good condition at the end of this time. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
