File 1181 5th April 1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}14/AP. Messrs Gandy's Brake Linings, Wheatland Works, SEACOMBE, Chesire. Dear Sirs, Test of 400M. Samples. We have tested the samples of "Safeguard" 400 M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} you kindly sent us. We find that when operating up to a maximum temperature of 200°C. the lining has a high and very constant value for µ, the fade being only 35% which we regard as good. When operating up to 300°C. the fade increases and the behaviour of the lining is not quite so consistent, as is usually the case. We still think it better than most linings, on this higher temperature range. The chief objection to your lining for our purposes is that when operating on the lower temperature range we find it inclined to squeal when cold, probably due to the high µ value. There are many linings which do not have this defect. We would suggest that a greater lead inclusion might prevent this. Under the circumstances we are not prepared to order further supplies of your material, but we would like to thank you once again for having given us the opportunity to test your lining. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
