Would you kindly note that a Lucas dynamo has been partially dismantled at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, and examined for all contacts which are likely to be faulty or become faulty owing to their dependence upon insulation for maintaining contact pressure. Drawing Lec.1217 attached has been made to shew in what way the four terminal connection plates should be altered to rectify the troubles which have been experienced with bad contacts. To avoid inconvenience as far as possible with production, the alterations have been cut down to the minimum. It was found that when tightening up the outside nuts in making the external connections, a small square for preventing the bolt from turning, burst the moulded insulation. This square on three of the bolts is shewn on Lec.1217 fitted into a sheet metal trough which engages with the moulded insulation at a much larger radius, and consequently with much less pressure when resisting the tightening up of the connections. The fourth bolt is prevented from turning by its own metal connection on the inside of the dynamo being bolted and sweated to a collar on its inside end. It was not possible to make bolts Nos. 1 and 4 uniform, owing to insufficient room opposite No.4, due to the field winding. The three remaining connections for the strip (Contd.)- | ||
