Proposed modifications for the Peregrine engine's oil system.

Peregrine Oil System.

Confirming our discussion regarding fitting up a Peregrine engine with modified oil system, the following is the list of features we propose to incorporate.

(1) Raise height of cross webs in bottom half.
(2) Cut weir in cross drive at front end of crankcase to deliver excess oil in front end of sump, and thus avoid stagnation in the two front compartments where oil cooling should be taken advantage of.
(3) Cut complete semi-circular grooves in top halves of main bearings. This will give oil feed for 3/4 rev. through the single holes in the journals. As the cranks are hard we cannot soften to drill 3 holes in journals.
(4) Add improved oil manifold with larger feed pipes to each bearing.
(5) Modify oil scraping rings on pistons to reduce consumption.
(6) Cast new lower half with cooling ribs increased in depth.
(7) Reduce oil pump output by adding .2 thick packing washer. This item is purely experimental but it is reported at the present time that the oil pump only delivers 16% to the main bearings, and if a smaller oil pump is permissible it would help us to keep the rear compartment of the crankchamber more full of oil.

Items (1) and (6) call for a new bottom half casting. In the meantime we can rig an engine up with the present ribbed sump with the cross webs artificially raised.

A further memo will follow giving particulars of sketches and drawings for the above modifications.
