Our Ref: 101/HHS. 20th May 1921. Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd. Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, X.4342 S STARTER MOTOR FOR GOSHAWK II. With reference to your favour of the 18th inst we have pleasure in enclosing herewith a blue print of the shaft for the Model SS {S. Smith} Starter Motor, also a sketch shewing the distance between the shoulder on the shaft and the end of the carcase to enable you to fix the dimension X on "N" Scheme 838. We should also like to draw your attention to the fact that the commutator end plate of the starter motor is provided with a projection which serves as a cable clamp, and we enclose a blue print of the commutator end plate on which this is shown. If it is necessary, we have no doubt that this cable clamp could be dispensed with, but we should prefer to retain it, and we have no doubt that by turning the motor round you can arrange to accomodate tyis clamp. If there are any further particulars which you require in connection with the starter motor will you please let us know, and we will send them on at once. We are still of the opinion that the motor is not sufficiently large to start a 6 cylinder 3" x 4.5" engine with a gear ratio of 8.4 : 1. Yours faithfully. p.p. S.Smith & Sons (MA) Ltd. Sgd.
