MINUTES OF DAILY CONFERENCE OF 24/9/20. Present - Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Mr. Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Copies to - R.{Sir Henry Royce} CJ. C. Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hr. Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} EB. (1) REAR SPRINGS FOR AMERICA. The Conference met today to discuss telephone message received from Mr.Claude Johnson yesterday, as follows - "I do not agree that it is necessary for both Bailey and "Platford to go to America. I should suggest that "Platford should go. Are you taking any steps to get a "passage? I suggest that you should telegraph to Belnap "and ask Belnap to authorise Hulley to telegraph to us "whether he agrees that the complaints of springing are "justified and the proposed action in connection therewith "is justified. I think you might add that we consider that "taking off springing from chassis which have been tested "at Derby and substituting another type is a serious breach "of our standardisation rule and may lead to serious "trouble. You might add also that we propose to send by "the first possible boat our chief tester to examine into "the matter, that there would be some months' delay in "getting the thinner leaf springs and that the American "Company would have to bear the cost of the rear springs "already despatched and those already on order." The Committee agreed to send the following cable to Mr.Belnap - "Please authorise Hulley telegraph to us whether he agrees "complaints of springing are justified, and the proposed "action in connection therewith is justified. We consider "taking off springs from chassis tested at Derby and "substituting another type is a serious breach of standard- "isation rule and may lead us into trouble. Platford "sailing Saturday to investigate. Will be some months' "delay in getting thinner leaf springs. American Company "would have to bear the cost of the rear springs already "despatched and those still on order. Do our experts at "Springfield agree with contents of your cablegram 143." | ||
