PHANTOM RADIATOR & BONNET. X.7250
EAC. 8. TYPE. X.7260

With reference to R5/M10.2.27., we have looked into the question of reducing the thickness of the radiator in the side view by altering the lengths of the tubes without doing anything to the shutters.

We have tried various ways of reducing or eliminating the recess at the back of the tubes which R.{Sir Henry Royce} speaks of. On EAC. 8. this recess is .250 and not .5 and we doubt very much whether it can be reduced at all. Extraordinary ways of reducing, such as the use of special tubes coming out to the full length by a series of steps, or reverting to the existing method of building a radiator with an external 'picture plate' have been considered, but we do not think that any would be acceptable to R.{Sir Henry Royce}

Under the circumstances we consider that there is now no design work to be done, and the only point that has to be determined is whether we can reduce the length of the tubes, and if so, how much. We suggest that a radiator should be built up with tubes s 4.250 long and otherwise exactly like an EAC. 8 type. R.{Sir Henry Royce} has not commented upon the proposal to reduce the dia. of the tubes, and we propose to get out some more figures shewing how the area to cooling can be affected by varying xxxxx diameters, and shall send you this in a short time.
