X.8796 Wd. {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} c. EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} c. Roy. {Sir Henry Royce} BY8/H. 15.5.25. E.O.6. WATFORD MAGNETO. -------------------- Referring to Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 4/NJ. 15.5.25. with copy of Messrs Firth & Sons' letter of the 14th inst, my position in this connection is that I agree I have for some time past insisted on improving the product. The last stage of this improvement has necessitated an entirely different method of finishing the locating bearings for the sleeve in the production of the sleeve itself. Apparently the improved quality which I have demanded to avoid complaints and the pulling down of magnetos etc, has resulted in Messrs. Firths having to put up their prices, but this does not alter my requirements in regard to the improved quality, particularly as the new engine as, and is, demanding a greater degree of silence on the accessories than any other engine we have run. It should not of course be overlooked that improved quality of magnetos which prevents us having to dismantle same sometimes two and three times, will make a very distinct saving so far as our expenditure in the Works is concerned, so that the extra charge made by Messrs Norths does not possibly represent an increased overall cost, /when including the buying of the magneto and fitting of same to a car satisfactorily to allow of despatch, is considered.
