(2) Whether an auto switch unit of any kind is or is not incorporated in the system, and when the dynamo is not running, it reduces the possibility of the battery discharging through the dynamo, owing to a derangement of the cutout causing the cutout contacts to stick or remain on contact. This, a single field breaking switch would not do.

(3) Its use in conjunction with an auto switch of the R.R. type gives the driver a special kind of control over the charging of the battery in spite of the presence of the auto switch, the following are some Notes we have written concerning this:-

NOTES ON THE ADDITIONAL CONTROL
ON THE BATTERY CHARGE GIVEN TO THE DRIVER
BY THE USE OF THE R.R. TYPE OF CHARGING SWITCH
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE R.R. AUTO CHARGE
CONTROL SWITCH.

It has been remarked in previous reports (e.g. EFCl/T3.6.27) dealing particularly with the advantages and disadvantages of the arrangements of the three "on" positions of the R.R. switch that it was considered that the present standard arrangement of B; M & C; and M & C. is the best all round, and particularly in view of the possibility of utilising some form of auto charge control switch. We are still of the opinion that the switch as at present arranged as standard will be the best arrangement with our auto switch as now developed. We think that the switch should mainly be looked upon as an ignition switch giving both ignitions for normal running, or either ignition separately for testing purposes. We do not think that the distribution of charge positions, i.e. the addition of C to M & B, and to M, and not to B, should be altered, or that the C markings on the switchbox should be deleted.
