X 607. #4 from EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} S.EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} /Thn9/H25.4.22. Re. FAULTY CHLORIDE BATTERIES. Replying to your memo Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 4/NJ21.4.22 and the various comments made by Mr. McKinnon, we beg to reply as follows:- 1. "He was sorry to find that batteries had been opened up, the acid had been poured off and some sections had been allowed to stand in water" We would point out in connection with this that various batteries are returned to us in different conditions. In some the acid has been poured off and the batteries are returned dry, in other cases the acid has been poured off and the batteries filled with distilled water. When the batteries are received by us we have to open them up in order to report on them to you. The good sections are then put into distilled water until Mr. McKinnon can inspect the faulty sections. 2. "In other instances the plates had been allowed to dry out". We do not agree that plates are allowed to dry out whilst in our possession. They are in this condition before being received by us. 3. "Complete batteries have been opened up, although the damage was confined to a broken lid {A. J. Lidsey} in one cell". In the case in question the cell was returned to us as faulty by one of our customers, and was opened up by us for investigation, as we did not think the customer would have returned it if the damage was merely confined to a broken lid {A. J. Lidsey} in one cell, especially as no mention was made of this in the complaint. We agree that when a battery is received requiring only some small obvious repair we do not hold this battery back for inspection, but carry out the repair without delay. EP. {G.
