STREAM LINE FILTER. X3701
We are sending you under separate cover an experimental model of a so called stream line filter which Mr. Royce would like you to test.
This filter was invented by Dr. Hele-Shaw, and consists of a number of paper washers stacked together in columns under spring pressure. The paper washers are threaded on square rods, and the flutes formed by the flats of the squares within the circular bore of the paper washer columns constitute oil ways, into which oil flows between the surfaces of the paper washers under pressure from the outside. As the oil penetrates radially into the filtering mediums as formed, the dirt is held up on the outside of the columns, and can be blown off, it is stated, by periodically subjecting the filter to a pressure of air in the reverse direction. The filter is of the bye-pass type, and deals only with a small quantity of the main circulation. It should therefore be tapped on to the pressure line of the engine, and returned to the crankchamber.
