Re: Phantom III - Crankcase.

I have made an inspection of all Phantom III chassis ready for despatch in the Test Dept. The condition and finish of the crankcases leaves nothing to be desired. The cases complained of by Cricklewood are of the early series, when trouble was experienced with water leaks from the joint of the cylinder head. To make the joint water tight, Heldite paste was used. This seeps out if over done, which apparently was the case. It is not now in use and the Depots should avoid using it. A satisfactory joint is now obtained by the use of a steam joint packing.

To tackle those that come into Depots with the stains of Heldite on the case, I have obtained a supply of cellulose thinners to see whether the stain can be dissolved.
