To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From BJ. 10,000 Miles Trials. BJ63/E24/6/26

Copy to PN{Mr Northey}, CWB, Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}

At a conference at Derby it was agreed, subject to your approval, that, instead of testing experimental chassis as suggested in the past, namely, that two chassis should be used, one to run 10,000 miles in France at high speeds by Works officials and the other to be tested under ordinary touring and traffic conditions by Sales officials, it would be satisfactory if one chassis were used for this purpose to make combined tests, and the tests should be as follows:

1. The car to go to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town for R.{Sir Henry Royce} to examine.
2. Sales officials should run it for 2 days (probably 400 miles) in England under ordinary touring conditions to obtain a general impression of the new features.
3. Works officials should run it in France 9,500 miles at high speed.
4. Works and Sales officials should run it to the Alps, say, 250 miles, and in the Alps for 2 days, say 200 miles, and from the Alps to London, say 300 miles.
5. Sales officials should run it for 6 long days in London traffic. (This was specially laid down as necessary by CH.)
6. Sales officials should run it for 2 days (say, 400 miles) under ordinary touring conditions in England.
7. The car should then be returned to the Works for examination.

With regard to the London traffic test, this may not always be found necessary, as sometimes the improvements on the chassis are such as would not be affected by London traffic.

In regard to the 10,000 miles test now starting, subject to your approval it was agreed as shown in the attached.

BJ.
