NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE ELDON STREET, BARRAS BRIDGE. 29th December, 1937 YOUR REF. OUR REF. JNL/KM C. S. Steadman Esq., Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Steadman, I received the damaged V belt that you returned to me after test this morning and have now had an opportunity of examining it. It is quite obvious what has happened. For a length of about 3" in the belt the cords have been violently stressed beyond their elastic limit and have become detached from the rubber surrounding them. Any such disturbance will cause the belt to run out of truth and to tend to climb the pulley. As you have yourself observed, the belts are prestretched in manufacture and in consequence in subsequent use do not show any permanent elongation. Thus, any violent abnormal stress will cause this damage. I am sorry that we have not received a clear bill for our first experiments, but I feel sure that with the new longer belt we are going to prepare, the initial high abnormal stress will be avoided. I telephoned you today to ask you to confirm what the new length of the belt should be because, if possible, we should like to have precise information on this point. With kind regards, Yours truly, FERODO LIMITED [Signature] Chief Chemist & Director. [Diagram with note 'loosened here'] | ||
