X.4159 RE SIMMS MAGNETIC PETROL GAUGE RECEIVED X.1798 In reply to your BY7/H23.6.20, we never intended these gauges to be used for "Octroi" purpose in France, and very much doubt whether they fulfill the law. We do not expect that they will be sufficiently accurate. We intended them to be an indication to the driver of the amount of petrol in hand, and the fact that they do not read the first two gallons does not appear to be an objection, though they should, of course, read with reasonable accuracy after-wards. The petrol gauge Mr. Royce designed, for instance, takes no notice of the first 1 1/2 gallons in the tank. The information we supplied to Messrs. Simms consisted of an outline of the tank giving outside dimensions, which was what they required, and all that we subsequently did was to provide a scheme shewing how Messrs Simms fittings should be put into our tank, along lines exactly similar to the same gauge on 7.CA and following Messrs. Simms instructions. We therefore must refuse to accept any responsibility for these gauges not reading correctly when they once begin to read. We were asked to recommend a make of gauge which Sales could recommend to customers who insisted on a gauge. Had it been intended to use it for "Octroi" purposes, we think it should have been mentioned at the time, and information as to the law supplied, as it may, and probably will, completely alter our views on the question of this gauge.
