Controls to Sch.625. A fair amount of slack has now developed in controls chiefly where the compensating device is situated for ignition. Also in bearing through crankcase for carburetter controls, and accelerator connecting lever from countershaft to cross shaft. Inlet pipe. This is still in good condition. We have now fitted new hot-spot bend E.73592a sent over. Exhaust pipes. These are in good condition. Exhaust boxes. The front box started to crack at flange from dowel hole to inside of pipe. The rear box is again cracked half way round at front side of Nos. 5 & 6 exhaust port. We have noticed that the rear box has so distorted at the bend that it is now fouling induction pipe at this point. We believe that the cracking of the rear exhaust box is due to the bend of the exhaust box endeavouring to straighten out as it becomes hot. This force is exerted along the pipe which, being held by the two dowel pins, opposes the movement of the distortion, with the result that a great stress is put on the centre of the pipe, and underneath portion at centre being strained the most. The result in due course is that the box cracks round the point in question. This same action of distortion, we believe, is the cause of the front dowel flange breaking. Enclosed are sketches shewing our views how this distortion takes place. Exhaust silencers. As previously reported the front silencer is almost bare, the lagging having been practically all torn off. The rear silencer lagging is in a similar condition. Silencer bkts. are still O.K. Exhaust cut-out. We have had no trouble with this since our last report. Exhaust snout and swan neck. These are still in good condition. Magneto & dynamo drive to LeC.2019 and 2028. The drive is still in good condition. As previously reported, the fabric coupling nearest dynamo has slightly deteriorated. This may have been caused when taking cover off contd :- | ||
