RE PETROL TANK. X.3457

With reference to the recent decision at the Conference held in London on June 19th to the effect that a larger tank than standard should be fitted, in those cases in which extra petrol is required to be carried, in preference to the use of an auxiliary tank. We now have a case, Chassis 35-LW. Gibbs, in which a 20 gallon tank is requested. This larger tank is called for in lieu of the supplementary tank originally requested by the customer but objected to by us. This raises the question of what our alternative standard should be in capacity. Is it worth while for standard to have only 2 gallons extra? And would you countenance for the next enquiry, which there is very little doubt we shall receive, for 4 gallons extra. Should we consider having 3 standards, i.e. 18, 20, and 22 gallons, or should we adopt 18 and 22, hoping that nobody will require more than 4 extra gallons. It might be worth while having 3 standards, as we do not desire to lead the 20 gallon man into carrying more than he really requires, i.e. 22 gallons. May we have a decision early please in order to proceed with Chassis 35-LW.
