WOr{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}9/T3.7.34

Thanks for your NHC1/BE.2.7.34. I am very glad that you have been to John Thompsons on the question of getting the frames for the SpectreCodename for Phantom III Chassis, you seem to have moved the job and made a lot of progress.

I have however, satisfied myself, and I am sure you will all like to know that, in this case I cannot find that Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} has delayed the job.

The following is a correct statement of affairs;

SpectreCodename for Phantom III Frame and Side Members were not released from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to order until 28.5.34, as a matter of fact, Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} did not get the drawings until 28.5.34, and they were handed to him by Cgh.{W Clough} and Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} ordered the Frame Side Members the same day, and gave Thompsons instructions to proceed with the rough tools.

There were of course, discussions taking place earlier than these dates, but there are no instructions that I can find in Roy{Sir Henry Royce}'s file earlier than the dates stated above. There is a letter from Thompsons saying that they have struck difficulties in making their rough tools, which put the date back, but I think the outstanding fact remains that Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} was not instructed until 28.5.34, and he acted immediately and told Thompsons to get on with the job.
