| To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} X. 762. R5/B4.7.17. X.682 - Re Chassis 7 CA. X.2937A¹. I was pleased to find that the valve gear on this car appeared to be quite silent. Even allowing that the mamshaft was nicely made and carefully adjusted, I should have scarcely thought there would be such an absence of noise. We hope it will be the same with the arrangement that we propose to use. Regarding the behaviour of the engine, it is undoubtedly considerably more powerful, but at the same time had lost some of its smooth running. The carburation appeared to be satisfactory. I found the clutch to be, as you suggested, decidedly harsh, but owing to being called back to London on urgent business, I could not experiment with it as I should have liked to have done. I intended to have lubricated it thoroughly with some animal fat, like pure lard. I had the impression that it was wearing better. I put 6 gallons of petrol in, owing to the indicator reading "no petrol" when there was some left. I should be glad if you will let me know what the consumption appeared to be. As far as I observed, it appeared to be about 14 miles to the gallon, but I kept the engine at its full vigour so as to test the springing. X.2650. Regarding the spring of the car, this appeared to be quite satisfactory at high speeds. I never found a road and a speed at which the car was at all unsteady. I Contd.
