| - 2 - PHANTOM III. con'td. MODIFICATION TO 'E' SERIES. As production for Phantom III has been put back further, the time has not yet arisen when this need be discussed. FAILURE OF STEERING GEAR. The failure of the steering gear on the Paris Demonstration car has been a matter for serious consideration. The matter has been dealt with under report BY.18/G.14.4.39. to Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and BY.7/G.15.4.39. to Sr. The position is that we have increased the size of the rocker shaft, with an additional strength of 55%. In addition, we are removing an increase of diameter which occurred between the taper keys carrying the pendulum lever and the jaws carrying the follower roller. The strength of this part is now practically the same as the position on the shaft where the taper keys end, but the elastic flexibility of the shaft has been multiplied by 1.12. In addition, we are introducing double curves of symmetrical design into the side steering tube in an endeavor to buckle the tube under such a load as one would get in a serious accident instead of twisting or breaking the rocker shaft. | ||
