We know that if we treat the standard brake lining with some lubricants such as powered graphite, brake squeaks disappear but the brake efficiency is also reduced. We have seen various reports to the effect that when Ferodo friction material is impregnated with some forms of vegetable oil, it ceases to squeak. Again, in this case we conclude that its co-efficient of friction is reduced. We are therefore endeavouring to procure anti-squeaking lining with a consistently low co-efficient of friction and to adjust the brakes accordingly. In view of this result we have obtained from Messrs. Ferodo several varieties of their standard materials which have been treated with vegetable oil compounds. In every case the co-efficient of friction has been lowered by this treatment. We are fitting this to both the 40/50 HP. and the 20 HP. We know that at present we have a very large reserve of braking power in our servo motor. We therefore hope that by taking advantage of this we shall be able to maintain our present braking efficiency and yet overcome brake squeaks. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/W.A.Robotham. | ||
