The coil was next run for about 25 mins on open circuit with the object of letting it burn and thus mark the point at which the fault had occurred, after which the secondary winding was taken off.
This winding was removed as near as possible layer by layer, during which process, besides being examined, the coil was frequently given a run first on the spark gaps and then open-circuited in order to see if the faulty part had been removed, or could be located by any visible means such as smoke, or sparks passing. In this way the winding was completely stripped without any fault being discovered. It was noticed however that the enamel covering the wire was easily removed, and adhered to the paper insulation when that was stripped off.
The primary by itself was then subjected to an alternating current test
