Gearbox and Actuating Gear (Continued).

badly and are, in fact, actually bottoming in the mating piece on each cone. The metal from the worn cones has mixed with the gearbox oil, which probably accounts for the noisy gears.

The condition of the Spigot Bush GW.1724 with the special groove on the end of the 3rd Motion Shaft is satisfactory, and would appear to have remedied the troubles regarding seizure of the bushes.

The third speed cones in S/MC. material have picked up, and the first motion shaft in S/N. is worn.

Excessive wear has taken place in the cam holes of the Actuating Sleeve GW.1429/30, produced in BZ/A.{Mr Adams} material, as illustrated by the attached blueprint Ex.I.200.

Slight signs of fidgetting on the taper of the extension shaft and coupling were noted. This may be due to the thin section at this point; the design, however, is such that severe road shocks will loosen the flange on the taper; Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}'s attention has been called to this point.

Slight picking up was observed on the first speed Driver Gear GW.1201.

It is obvious that the aforementioned pieces are not a success and that standard material should be used on rebuilding the gearbox.

The backlash of all gears was measured before and after test, and is as follows :-

Constant Mesh Gears before test - .002.
" " " after " - .003.
3rd Speed Gears before " - .004.
" " " after " - .0065.
2nd " " before " - .004.
" " " after " - .006.
1st " " before " - .006.
" " " after " - .006.
Direct Gears before " - .005.
" " after " - .007.

Petrol Tank.

Complete to LOP.FW.10179.

The Petrol Tank was in good condition apart from a slight foul on the Exhaust Pipe. The Petrol Tank Support Strips were also

continued.
