B.60 & B.80 VALVE SPRINGS.

Double springs in accordance with the memo By/CS. 1/EH.23.5.39 were tried on the inlet valves of B.80 No.5 unit prior to it going out to France in 30.G.VII. These springs were not satisfactory and in consequence, the Phantom III adapted double springs were refitted.

Based on the results obtained on B.80 No.5 unit, the double springs were redesigned, both the washers top and bottom and the actual springs. These are specified for the Alum 8 unit and comprise the following:-

EB.5106 Bottom spring washer.
EB.5055 Valve guide.
EB.5053 Top spring washer.
EB.5107 Inner springs.
EB.5108 Outer spring washer.

The above caters for the alum sealing washer EW.2260.

We should like you to produce two sets of the above for trial as soon as possible and when available one set fitted to a test bed unit.

At the request of By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} one set of springs should be produced in our own works and one set by The Tempered Spring Co. for comparison. All previous instructions for the inlet valve springs on B.60 Nos. 5 and 6 and B.80 No.7 should be held up pending the trial of the aforementioned springs, which, if satisfactory, will be instructed for these units which are now in the course of erection.

Any immediate requirements for inlet valve springs as per B.80 No.6 unit should be fitted with Ph.III double mocked up springs.
