- For the attention of Mr.S.S.Tresilian -

Dear Sirs,

By sheer accident we have not replied to your esteemed letter of the 1st instant, and ask you to accept our apologies for our unfortunate omission.

In regard to your suggestion of interposing an elastic layer between the linings and the carrying plate, the device so far as making up presents no difficulty, and we could cement a sheet of untreated asbestos or other slightly resilient material, to Ferobestos or Ferodo Bonded Asbestos, but the anti-judding effect is very much open to question, and we doubt its effectiveness. But if you would like to try out the arrangement we shall be glad to be of assistance. We suggest cork, asbestos or felt, but feel that unless the underlying fabric is reasonably thick, the cementing medium will penetrate slightly and harden up the layer, which can hardly be more than 1/16" thick, unless you are prepared to increase the overall thickness of the linings. For example, the lining itself and the elastic layer may each be 1/8", giving a total thickness including the plate, of about 0.62".

The lining will have to be riveted to the plate - otherwise in the moulding process the cementitious matter will penetrate the softer material and remove any elasticity it may possess.

Frankly, we do not consider that the object you have in view will be achieved, and if juddering cannot be eliminated by the ordinary methods, we suggest the best way to deal with it is to increase the spring pressure and lubricate the clutch. We make a fabric lining for this particular purpose, and we can assure you it is absolutely effective.

Yours faithfully,
FERODO LIMITED,

Chief Engineer.
