Report continuing the review of a 1939 Standard 12 Saloon and summarizing competitor 10-HP car performance.

1939 Standard 12 Saloon (Ctd:-

Brakes
Bendix - very good and light. Handbrake of the pistol grip type, under the instrument board in the centre - not very easy to reach and not very effective.

Body
Very quiet with remarkably good leg room both front and rear. Seating comfortable. Luggage space in the body, good, and good "parcel room".

Acceleration figures.
10-30 m.p.h. in top - 11.1/5 secs.
0-50 " through the gears - 24.1/5 "

SUMMARY.

The whole range of 10-HP cars which I have tried is interesting with the exception of the Vauxhall and Austin. These two were no doubt bad examples of their type but even so, it is apparent that there are no outstanding features upon either of them.

All cars were tried under similar type of weather conditions.

I feel that I would go for a 10-HP Standard for general quiet and performance. The acceleration figures claimed for it by the Standard Car Co. are -

10-30 m.p.h. in top - 11 secs.
0-50 " through the gears - 22 ".

These figures show that it is, in its class, as good a performer as the 9 and 12 are in their respective categories, and the figures given by the Standard Co. for these latter two, are almost identical with the figures I myself obtained; so I think we can assume that the figures given for the 10-HP are quite reliable.

The Standard independent suspension gives an excellent ride although it may prove to be slightly noisy on bad roads.

Of the normally spring cars the Morris is out of the way the best but the engine is noisy at low speed and propeller shaft vibration set up at 58 m.p.h.

Next to the Standard car comes the 1940 Hillman Minx - not quite such a good performance at speed and not as quiet as the Standard I tried.

I feel that both the Standard and the Hillman chassis would be useful to us in the development of a 10-HP car.
