VISIT TO MESSRS.SMITH'S

We visited Messrs.Smiths & Sons Ltd., at their Cricklewood Works yesterday, and the following is the result of our conversations on various points raised by us and Messrs.Smith's in regard to 20/25 and Bensport instruments.

(1) Faulty Petrol Gauges.

A number of the petrol gauges which the Test Dept., have returned where examined in our presence and in only one case was any trouble shown. In this case the spindle movement was definitely bent causing the needle to stick on the scale.

It appears that the way we test our petrol gauge in the Test Dept., should be modified as it is possible to obtain a false reading if the meters are artificially tested away from the chassis. Messrs.Smiths point out to us that the gauge will never be called upon to submit to the test given to them by the Test Dept. away from the chassis, with which remarks we agree. They have offered to let us have a special resistance potentiometer for the use of our Test Dept., in testing meters away from the instrument.

We will arrange to discuss with Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} further the question of these faulty petrol gauges.

With regard to the petrol gauge tank attachment that burnt out recently in the Test Dept. Messrs. Smiths have not yet received this and could not therefore give us a report on the cause of failure.

We have requested them to carefully examine this tank attachment and let us have a report on the cause of its failure as this type of failure may be fraught with serious consequences.
