GRY{Shadwell Grylls} X1020 Seeme To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.3.6.35. c. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Oil Retaining Bearings. With reference to the tests conducted by Ransome and Marles on two bearings, one of the New Departure self sealing type and the other with an oilite cage as recommended by themselves, "E" suggests that we should make our own test on a bearing of the New Departure type. If our test confirms that of Ransome and Marles, in that oil leaks from the bearing, we should like to know whether the leak is from the junction of the end plates and the outer race or from the felt rings or both. Presumably the outer race was stationary in the test by Ransome and Marles but for our intended use in the clutch the whole bearing rotates as a unit most of the time and, therefore, leakage is more likely to occur from the end plate joints than from the felt. We should like to know whether in the test by Ransome and Marles the outer race was stationary or not. We think that in view of the satisfactory condition of the bearing with an oilite cage tested by Ransome and Marles, we should ask them to supply us with some bearings similarly fitted with oilite cages and suitable in size for the spigot bearing for the Borg and Beck clutch on the Bentley, which is at present instructed as a New Departure No.88504 20 m/m x 47 m/m x 17.75 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} The Ransome and Marles bearing would presumably have the standard width for a 20 x 47 bearing of 14 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Will you kindly put through the necessary order. We think that the trial of the New Departure bearing in the clutch should go through in order to have confirmation of other tests. HDY{William Hardy}, [signature] | ||
