Six-stage machining process for a cylinder, including discussions on efficiency and cost.

2.          R9/P 22. 4. 14.

1.     No. 1 head facing to bottom.
2.     No. 2 head, rough boring.
3.     No. 3 head, finish boring.
4.     No.4 head, counter sinking.
5.     No. 5 head, chamfering.
6.     No. 6.reloading position.
This would simplify matters, as the work would be done in less time, and secondly, no heads or cutters would have to be changed, unless the tools were blunt.
Kindly set out a rough small scale diagram, finding out the size of the large table necessary for the six positions.
When you receive this letter the drawing of the Northcliffe cylinder will be in Derby, so that you can refer to that for the necessary dimensions.
Kindly discuss this matter with Mr Wormald and Mr Nadin, and show them the advantages/it offers, so that it is well worth while, even if the machine costs another £200.
It is intended that the cylinder be put on the turntable with the valve pockets downwards, so that the cuttings fall into the pockets.
The two boring heads will require to have about 10"
