40/50 HP. CHASSIS, EXHAUST UNION NUTS.
--------------------------------------

Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}2/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 7. 5. 24. and in reply to Br1/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 2. 5. 24. whilst we realise the trouble we have always had with these Unions, we do not at the moment know of a definite cure.

The proposal to use Phosphor Bronze or Gun Metal Nuts has been discussed on several occasions, when it has been turned down because the Gun Metal will expand and leave the Union loose when it is hot, whilst in addition, the strength of the material falls very rapidly as the temperature of the piece rises. The fall is so rapid as to make the material entirely unsuitable for use in this connection.

We propose trying to overcome the trouble by two means :-

1. Increasing the pitch diameter of the nut over that of the thread, by .005"

2. Whilst carrying out (1), to "Calorize" each of the parts. Mr. Shelton has this experiment in hand, which will be put in the hands of the Experimental Dept. in the usualway, in the near future.

If this fails, the only other solution that I know of will be to entirely re-design the joint, using a bolted joint instead of a screwed union.
