WHEN REPLYING PLEASE REFER TO [STAMP: RECEIVED 2 JUL 31] Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Limited., DERBY. X/R3 1st, July, 1931. Dear Sirs, Your reference.....HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/HEW3/AD. With further reference to the type HF.{H. W. Frost - Coachwork Inspector}43 Alto Horn you returned to us recently. As you say the guide spring had fractured and actually the cause of this was that the centre clamping washer had been assembled with the wrong side adjacent to the spring. This washer is radiused on one side and this should obviously have been assembled next to the spring as of course the side with the edge left with a burr from the press is likely to set up a stress in the spring. We found out some time ago that while the importance of this was appreciated by the works, an isolated one or two had slipped through the inspection with the washer wrongly assembled. We are having the horn overhauled and returned to you. It is most unfortunate that this should have occurred on the sample horn you had for test but the foregoing is the explanation for the fracture having occurred. Yours faithfully, JOSEPH LUCAS LIMITED. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT. S. Morreford | ||
