(2) Contd. Using the standard S.U. Carburetter. Immediate investigation and improvements to the present carburetter should be pushed. Absence of some form of mixture control plays an important part. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} proposes to instruct tests on mixture control schemes. Such tests should show the weak and strong spots in the carburetter, and by improving should improve consumption. (3) Carburetters flush flooding. Causing engine failures. This has not occurred on SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s car, but he is alarmed about it. Several customers have had it, and C's car failed last Thursday (not new car - run about 10,000 miles). Investigation of this trouble has so far been rather difficult, owing to our not being able to reproduce the trouble or be on the spot when it happened. This feature also appears to be serious, and suggest also on your next conference agenda, as per (2). To summarise views:- Modification (Depot sheet No.280) being applied retrospectively. Doubtful if definite cure, but action advisable; experience will confirm. Foreign matter in petrol system considered possible cause. Cleaning out petrol system during manufacture and test seems thoroughly done. A general "overhaul" of our routine is again being done. We do not suffer from this trouble on test. A carburetter returned to us for this fault has run 100 hours on test beds and no similar trouble experienced. contd: | ||
