To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re Bensport Car. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}19/H10.2.33
Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}BY.E.

Referring to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}6/MJ.8.2.33 I agree that the dynamo drive will have to be altered for the reasons you give, and to the suggestion of a 40/50 dynamo being fitted instead of the 20/25 size.

I note that this means that we cannot possibly have the stand by magneto. Such being the case I feel that we ought to have a spare coil mounted up on the dashboard and if possible wired up by means of a two way switch, so that in the event of a coil breakdown no serious inconvenience would be caused.

I do not agree that we can do without the magneto on the 20/25, at least until we change over to J.II or J.III.

I am pleased to note that Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} is leaving with the car for France to-day and that it will be fitted with the higher axle ratio, Rudge Whitworth wheels and quiet second.

I am also pleased to note that the modifications referred to above in regard to dynamo drive will not be allowed to interfere with the programme decided on at our recent Derby conference.

I have noted with interest and conveyed to PN{Mr Northey} the information you give re crankshaft critical speed and revs; also your remarks in regard to experimenting with alterations to the intermediate gears.

Regarding bodies and the last paragraph of your letter, if I remember correctly, you had in mind that the smaller body on the Riley 9 was easier to get in and out of than the larger body on the Bensport, and if, as I believe, you have some suggestions to make on the subject of making the best advantage of the present dimensions, I should be glad if you would let me have a note of them so that I can take it up with EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} before we get too far ahead with the next body.
