-3- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Grv.7/KT.25.9.33. For the uncompensated system shown, the amounts of braking can be shown to be front mαρ/(m²+αλ) and rear nβρ/(n²+βμ) and the sponge at the points F.{Mr Friese} and R.{Sir Henry Royce} to be (m²+αλ)/α and (n²+βμ)/β respectively measured in in/lb. Suppose we measure the ratio of these quantities to be k.{Mr Kilner} Then making the assumption that α = β we get μ = (m² - kn{D. G. McKechnie - Sales} + αλ)/kα and the quantities of front and rear braking proportional to m and kn{D. G. McKechnie - Sales} On 19.C.IV. we measured the sponge at F.{Mr Friese} and R.{Sir Henry Royce} and obtained the following table of results. LOAD APPLIED. | DEFLECTION AT F.{Mr Friese} | R.{Sir Henry Royce} 50 lbs. | - | 0 100 | 0 | .070 150 | .110 | .105 300 | .090 | .055 50 | .040 | .043 APPROX. EFFY. | 90% | 90% We are not in favour of our brakes being uncompensated front to rear. Unless the relative areas front and rear are in the same proportion as the amounts of braking, wear in the linings will continually be altering the ratio owing to sponge in the linkage, tending always to the ratio of the areas.
