in the wiring for instance, which involved modifications from an Instruction Book point of view, and in spite of the fact that I was continually striving to obtain definite information it was not until the end of 1919 that such information was available for compiling the pamphlet dealing with the electrical scheme, based on notes received from Mr. Clark on October 30th. In December proofs of this pamphlet illustrated by numerous photographs and a diagram were sent to Mr. Royce and other people for approval. Mr. Royce however, did not quite agree with the arrangement, complaining, in his reply early in January, that the descriptions were long and made the equipment look very complicated. He said that :-

" I should be pleased if Mr. Clark would continue to work upon it with a view of making it shorter, only saying exactly the words which are needed."

In a subsequent discussion Col. Barrington decided that in view of the fact that Mr. Clark had specialised on the electrical parts of the chassis he should endeavour to revise the proofs to meet Mr. Royce's wishes. At the same time Col. Barrington sent a memo to Mr. Royce to the effect that the modification of the matter was in hand and pointing out the difficulty of making a system appear not complicated, which, in reality, is complicated.
