700 1030 To Ba/HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From Bm. Copy to Mr. Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner} Bm/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation} Bm.2/EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}15.3.41. MYTH DETAIL DRAWINGS Some criticisms made by HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} on Myth drawings were reviewed by Bm., who made the following comments:- 1 - CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL PROJECTING FROM CRANKCASE FACE - This has been considered more than once and it has been proved that cheap American cars use this type of oil seal and that, actually, there is no saving in having it flush, since this produces an inferior seal and does not save appreciable machining. 2 - R.E.1792. OIL PUMP DRIVE - It was agreed that, for the first run, we should delete the shoulder and centre the drive to the top of the splines to .499. The undercut should be retained. The splines should be such that, after grinding to .499 a definite flat should be left on the top so that the inside should not be damaged when passing the splines through it. 3 - R.E.1795 - It was agreed that, for the first run, we should try splines of 1/10" shorter. 4 - R.E.1620 - EXHAUST MANIFOLDS - It was agreed that we should try clearance instead of oval holes, since the manifold was short. 5 - R.E.1680 - It was agreed that the radius should be increased 25 thou. 6 - R.E.1639 - CONNECTING ROD BOLTS - This was agreed to be a fundamental question of design and Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner} would be asked to reconsider alternatives. Bm. will get a number of connecting rods from American and cheap Englishcars and we will summarise the present practice. 7 - R.E.1683 - Bm. does not see why the Shop should consider difficult to drill a small hole through a camshaft, when air guns are turned out for 30/- with .177 barrels, and these are rifled. If the taper plug is really objected to, a Welsh washer might be considered as an alternative. The Experimental Department, however, have taken two years to produce a Welsh plug which worked satisfactorily, even after having been supplied with full details of how to do the job from America. 8 - R.E.1704 - OIL PUMP - The detail drawings of this should be submitted to Mr. Wheeler for his comments on die casting. It was also agreed that the first pump could be run without bushes, since the camshaft bearings directly in the crankcase proved entirely satisfactory. 9 - R.E.1705 - The details of this casting should be submitted to Wheeler for his consideration. The suggested locking plate can be tried out on the first engine. | ||
