Dear Sirs,

RE: DAMAGED HUB AND NUT.

Referring to your letter of the 4th inst. (ref. GLH/DMP) we have always made a point at these Works to avoid plating on the thread itself, as invariably we find that two disabilities arise :-

(1). The form of the thread is distorted owing to the fact that in plating, the inner diameter of the thread plates more quickly than the outside diameter, as the plating solution becomes weaker or has less throwing power after passing into the space occupied by the thread, mainly, of course, due to deposition taking place on the inner diameters or flanks of the thread.

(2). It is difficult to get good adhesion without severe etching, the latter again spoils the thread form, and if good adhesion is not obtained the plating rolls up under the pressure which is necessary in screwing up the nut.

In future, therefore, we agree that it is of the utmost importance that the threads should not be plated. We would like them to be protected by painting with 20% solution of Lanoline in Benzine, which is an effective rust preventative as well as forming a good lubricant. The solution should, of course, be applied to the thread both on the hub and in the nut.

Yours faithfully,
FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
