To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} X4425 R1/M1.7.22. IGNITION PLUGS. X.1918. RE/GOSHAWKS. X4425 With reference to ignition plugs, recent experience has shewn that the Lodge porcelain plug sent with the Goshawk, is not reliable. This is one in which the central electrode is screwed in and surrounded with porcelain at the point. We cannot believe that it is correct to fit it in this way and evidently the porcelain insulator will not stand up. Regarding mica plugs, the K.L.G's have so far done well, but I hear from Messrs. Ricardo's experimental shops that these will not stand on most engines which are hard pressed, therefore we believe that they may not last long, and are very expensive. You could confirm their want of reliability by running this type of an aero engine, in which case we believe that the mica insulation around the central electrode becomes loose and detached, and fails hopelessly.
