40/50 HP. CHASSIS - SPRINGING.
------------------------

The proposals being put forward by Sales that for all cars other than those fitted with 'C' columns we should fit the old normal type springs, as Sales' opinion now appears to be that for other cars which are likely to be driven fast the low rated springs are so great a dis-ability from the point of view of causing steering re-action that the fitting of low rated springs to cars other than those with 'C' columns should be discouraged.

The point arose as the result of a complaint received from Mr. Colin Kingham, particulars of whose car body and weights is as follows :-

Sedanca Limousine 'E' Type.
12 Cwt. body.
Passengers - maximum 5. average 3.
Luggage - 1 cwt.
(Specified for United Kingdom, Town and Touring).

to which we fitted under the present ruling low rated type springs. Mr. Colin Kingham, after driving the car in France complained very strongly of the kick on the steering wheel, and that he thought the car as the result of the spring re-actions was dangerous at high speeds, being difficult to control on roads showing a heavy camber.

Before agreeing to Sales' suggestion, which is rather a drastic modification to our present procedure, I consider that it is desirable that the matter should be freely discussed between ourselves, and the resultant opinion submitted to Sales as representing our views at Derby on the subject.
