MEMO. FROM:- C.L.L. TO:- MR. ELLOR. E.Dodd Re. VULTURE. V.S.I. SUPERCHARGER. We have now had an opportunity of examining the V.S.I. supercharger ex R.1287 which failed after 101 hours due to rotor seizure. The condition of the rotor is extremely bad and the damage on the tips of the blades and the corresponding damage on the casing has almost obliterated the original seizure. We have had one or two similar failures and a general examination of the components has led us to believe that the trouble is due to high bearing loads on the drive side of the rotor, and is initiated by a failure of the cage of the drive side roller bearing. A modification is now in hand to increase the size of the drive side roller bearing and it is expected to have the first of these components on test in about a fortnight's time. C.L.L. | ||
