DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} LONGER BONNETS FOR 25HP. Whilst we appreciate the desirability of lengthening and in other ways improving the 25HP car bonnet we do not agree that all the alterations suggested can be brought into production before 'U' series. The position as regards appearance appears to be that a stock chassis is to be altered to have 3" longer bonnet 2" wider dashboard, rivetless hinges etc, and that a body is being made to suit this chassis. We presume that even for an appearance point of view only, the standardisation will not be complete until the modified appearance has been approved. The position as regards the new features from a mechanical point of view is firstly that we are not prepared to issue a standardisation sheet for the rivetless hinge until we have seen how the bonnet on 18-GIV has behaved during the 10,000 miles test in France; apart from this one case we have no other experience of this bonnet; secondly we have not yet found a satis factory scheme for strengthening up the side spare wheel carrier when an over hanging bonnet is used (the scheme we hoped would be successful has failed on 18-GIV). Until these matters are cleared up it does not appear policy to standardise the new features. We should anticipate that by the time the revised appearance of the sample stock chassis has been approved and the mechanical difficulties overcome we shall be producing the last fifty cars in 'T' series. With regard to the additional proposal to use PII bonnet fasteners we believe that a previous attempt was made to standardise this feature but Sales turned it down on the score of cost, the cost of the PII fastener is £3-10-0 per set and the 20/25HP type is £2-0-0; mechanically we do not know that the PII type has any advantages over the 20/25 HP type.
