SpectreCodename for Phantom III All Helical Gearbox.

This gearbox fitted to the Vulture has completed on the dynamometer half an hour's running at full torque on top, 2nd and 1st gears. After 28 minutes in 3rd gear the thrust collar for the 3rd speed free pinion on the 3rd motion shaft failed, the end load then causing the top gear constant mesh cones to engage.

All the running was done with a lubricant consistency of 50:50 engine oil and Whitmore's compound. There was no failure of the teeth nor picking up on the 1st speed pinions.

At full torque on 2nd gear the dogs remain in engagement but at smaller throttle openings the dogs work out of mesh.

The box is at present dismantled to fit N.Sch.4298 to prevent 2nd gear jumping out, and will then undergo half an hour on each gear with engine oil as lubricant.
