To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X7410 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/LG16.4.29. S.S. ROAD SPRINGS. With reference to BY/HEB{H. Biraben}6/15.4.29. We agree that to begin with it is a good idea to confine the drilling and grooving of the springs to the top 4 leaves. We propose to run the springs with the lower leaves surrounded with the thin felt so that they will collect the overflow oil from the top leaves. This thin felt is a scheme at present in use in the Test Dept. and we think that if it can be soaked in oil it should provide adequately for the lower leaves and shall test accordingly. With regard to the bedding of the leaf tips. We are going to endeavour to concentrate the bedding at the tip of the top 4 leaves on a band the full width of the spring directly under the oil hole. If spring bedding is a feasible proposition on production we think it would be as well to issue some indication of the bedding we consider to be most desirable.
