Dear Mr. Robotham,

Many thanks for your letter of the 29th ulto. in which you refer to the question of cylinder liners.

Although it would appear at first sight that the fitting of cylinder liners raises the cost of the complete block by as much as 40 per cent, you must appreciate that our ordinary cylinder block, as used on our present production engines is such a simple manufacturing proposition that the fitting of liners does have some material effect on the finished cost of the block.

I did not intend to convey to you that we were not using liners of the phosphor-chrome type, but it would appear that you have obtained this impression from paragraph five in my letter. What I did intend to convey was that the service results, on both public service and goods vehicles, are so inconsistent that it is difficult to formulate any opinion with regard to the actual reduction in cylinder wear due to the fitting of liners. There is no doubt, however, that it is in practically every case a successful application, but on the petrol engines they have certainly not touched the results obtained on chromium plated blocks.

As a matter of interest I can inform you that our standard Farington-produced liner has a constituency
