To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce}

Sunday evening.
8.12.28.

'SS{S. Smith}' CHASSIS AND G.4.

The situation, thanks to Mr. Wormald and yourself, is hopeful for next year's show.

The great point at this minute is a car of 40/50 and 20 HP. i.e. a single example of 'SS{S. Smith}' and G.4. in France doing miles, and that they should not fail in any serious way.

It will be necessary for them to cover a great mileage per day but we need not smash them unreasonably over bad roads.

Suppose they covered 40 m.p.h. (40/50) and 35 m.p.h. (20 HP.) average, this would be equal to a fast owner-driver who would drive as fast as he could without discomfort to himself and passengers.

We should propose testing for strength of parts on the bumping rig, but Sales are not interested in this as they do not understand its relative value, the same applies to test bed running.

So for the next Board Meeting (Jan.10th. - I believe) we must have done the largest of miles possible.

A second car of each would be a safe-guard in case of accident or delay of any kind.

Everything points that it will be an immense advantage to the RR. Co. to get this work through so that we can carry on the programme of showing next October. We can do this if we can start running soon and do not have any serious trouble.

Do not consider me, contd :-
