Hair Cracks in Crankshafts. Attached herewith please find copy of a cable received from Mr. Nadin. There seems to be very little hope indded that the points suggested can be put into practice, owing to the fact that the A.I.D. are even taking exception to a hair crack when it occurs on a repair engine in number 7 journal, through which one might say no load at all is being transmitted. The only stress that this journal actually carries being due to the bending moment plus the slight tortional stress due to driving the accessories, or that due to starting up the engine from cold, either by hand or by electric motor.
